River Buffers, Roadside Trees and Farm Tree Lines
Caroline is the one county on the Delmarva Peninsula with no Bay or ocean shoreline, but the Critical Area still reaches it. Any land within 1,000 feet of the Choptank River, Tuckahoe Creek, Marshyhope Creek or their tidal tributaries falls under it. The first 100 feet is a protected buffer, and most cutting there needs a buffer management plan approved by the county.
For up to five dead, dying, diseased, invasive or hazardous buffer trees, the county uses a short simplified plan. Each tree removed is usually replaced with a native tree at least 3/4 inch thick, planted in spring or fall, and the county checks that it survives two growing seasons. Denton, Federalsburg, Greensboro and Hillsboro run their own Critical Area programs, so jobs inside those towns go through town hall.
Away from the rivers, most of the county is cropland. Old tree lines along fields and farm lanes grow over equipment paths and power lines. Trees in a public road right of way are protected under Maryland’s Roadside Tree Law, and work on them takes a state permit and a licensed tree expert. We handle that paperwork as part of the job.

Tornadoes and Wind Damage Across Caroline County
Wide open fields give storms plenty of room to build here. On April 13, 2020, an EF0 tornado with 80 mph winds tracked almost five miles from Baltimore Corner toward Henderson, snapping and uprooting trees along the way. On March 16, 2026, an EF1 tornado with winds near 100 mph hit the Ridgely area, toppling a big tree onto a house and knocking out power. If a storm drops a tree on your home, barn or road frontage, call 410-827-5198 at any hour. Our crews work 24/7.

Common tree problems in Caroline County:
Soggy ground and shallow roots. Much of the county is flat with a high water table and seasonal wet spots called Delmarva Bays. Roots stay near the surface, so large trees can tip over when soil is soaked and the wind picks up.
Overgrown field edges. Hedgerows and tree lines along fields and farm lanes get crowded and leaning over time. Limbs reach into equipment paths, fences and power lines. Regular trimming keeps them useful as windbreaks without causing damage.
Ash trees in decline. Emerald ash borer is present on the Eastern Shore. Infested ash trees thin out from the top, then die and turn brittle quickly. Dead ash is safer to take down sooner than later.
Spotted lanternfly. Caroline County has been inside Maryland’s spotted lanternfly quarantine since 2023, and the quarantine now covers the whole state. If you see the insects gathering on your trees, we can look at what is affected and talk through options.
Our crews cover all of Caroline County with tree removal, trimming and pruning, stump grinding and storm damage cleanup. Farm ponds and wet ground overrun with reeds are a job for our Marsh Master phragmite control, and we sell seasoned firewood too. We are permitted to move and sell wood under Maryland rules. Ask for a free estimate and we will come out to see the trees in person.

Caroline County Tree Service FAQ
Does the Critical Area apply in Caroline County if I am not on the Bay?
It can. In Caroline County it covers land within 1,000 feet of the Choptank River, Tuckahoe Creek, Marshyhope Creek and their tidal tributaries. If your trees are in that zone, removal usually needs a county buffer plan and replanting. We can check your property before any work begins.
Can I cut a tree along the road in front of my farm?
If the tree stands in the public road right of way, Maryland’s Roadside Tree Law treats it as part of the State Forest. Work on it needs a state tree care permit and a licensed tree expert. Trees fully on your side of the right of way are different, and we can help sort out which is which.
Can you clear a large wooded area on my land?
Clearing a few trees is different from clearing woods. In the Critical Area, the county limits how much forest can come out and requires replanting, and larger development projects fall under the county forest conservation law. Tell us your plans and we will point you to the right permits before we start.
Do you charge to come out to Caroline County?
No. Estimates are free anywhere in Caroline County, from Marydel down to Federalsburg. We walk the property, look at the trees, the access and what is nearby, then give you a written price before any work is scheduled.
