Tree Service in Kent County, MD

Kent County is just across the Chester River from our yard at 100 Arrington Road in Queenstown. Our crews head north on MD 213 through Centreville, cross the Chester River bridge into Chestertown, and keep going to Rock Hall, Worton, Galena, Betterton and Millington. Kent has fewer people than any other county in Maryland, but it has miles of Bay and river shoreline, working farms and big old shade trees. Our work is led by a Maryland Licensed Tree Expert (LTE# 1929), and we take storm calls 24/7.

Shoreline Trees and Kent County Critical Area Rules

Kent County has water on three sides: the Chesapeake Bay to the west, the Sassafras River to the north and the Chester River to the south. All land within 1,000 feet of tidal water or tidal wetlands is in the Critical Area. The first 100 feet is a protected buffer, and the county makes it wider on steep slopes and on wet or easily eroded soils.

In the buffer, the county does not allow trees, shrubs or ground cover to be cut without an approved Buffer Management Plan, and it does not allow clearing for a water view. A dead tree can come out if the spot is replanted in native cover. A diseased, dying or hazardous tree is replaced with a new tree. Farther from the water but still in the Critical Area, clearing needs a Forest Clearing Plan and replanting.

Before any cutting, we walk your property, tell you which plan applies and work with Kent County Planning, Housing and Zoning in Chestertown. Chestertown, Rock Hall and Betterton run their own Critical Area programs, so inside those towns we go through the town office instead. Ordinary pruning of yard trees away from the water is simpler, and we can tell you on site.

Bay Storms and Round-the-Clock Tree Removal

Kent County’s low necks and Bay beaches flood when storms push water up the Chesapeake. During Hurricane Isabel in September 2003, tidal flooding reached Rock Hall, Chestertown, Skinners Neck and Piney Neck, and the tide at Tolchester Beach set a record of 7.91 feet above mean low water. More than 100 homes, vehicles and boats were damaged. Soaked ground and high wind still bring big trees down on houses and roads. If a tree lands on your home, car or driveway, call 410-827-5198 any hour of any day. We respond 24/7 to make it safe and clear it away.

Common tree problems in Kent County:

Dying ash trees. Maryland confirmed emerald ash borer in Kent County in 2017. Ash trees in yards and woodlots are still dying from it, and dead ash turns brittle quickly, so removing them early is safer for your house and our crew.

Spotted lanternfly. Kent County joined Maryland’s spotted lanternfly quarantine in 2022, and the whole state has been under it since March 2026. The insects favor tree of heaven, which we can remove, and wood leaving your property has to be handled under the quarantine rules.

Tall pines and poplars. Loblolly pine and tulip poplar are two of the most common big trees in Kent County. They grow tall and fast, and when they stand close to a house or driveway, a single storm can snap a top or drop a heavy limb.

Trees leaning over the water. Shoreline erosion leaves many trees hanging over creeks and the Bay. County rules allow a tree leaning over the water to be cut, but the stump and roots must stay in place to hold the bank. We cut them the right way.

Kent County homeowners, farms and marinas call us for tree removal, trimming and pruning, stump grinding and storm damage cleanup. On waterfront property we also offer Marsh Master phragmite control for shorelines, ponds and wetlands, and we sell seasoned firewood. We are permitted to move and sell wood under Maryland rules. Estimates are always free, so book yours now.

Kent County Tree Service FAQ

Do I need approval to remove a tree in Kent County?
If the tree is within 1,000 feet of tidal water or tidal wetlands, yes. Kent County wants an approved plan before trees in the Critical Area come down, and work in the 100-foot buffer needs a Buffer Management Plan. Trees farther inland on a home lot usually do not. We can tell you which applies when we see the property.

Can I take down trees to open up a view of the water?
Not in the buffer. Kent County does not allow clearing in the first 100 feet from the shoreline just for a view. Dead, dying, diseased or hazardous trees can usually be removed with approval and replanting. We can assess which of your trees qualify.

Do you really come up to Rock Hall and Galena from Queenstown?
Yes. Kent County is part of our regular service area. We reach Chestertown on MD 213 over the Chester River bridge, then continue to Rock Hall, Worton, Galena, Betterton and the rest of the county for estimates, scheduled work and 24/7 emergency calls.

How much will my tree job cost?
Price depends on the size of the tree, how close it is to your house or the water, how easy it is to reach and whether a county plan and replanting are needed. We come out and give you a free written estimate before any work starts.
