Marshyhope Creek and Floodplain Trees
Marshyhope Creek has shaped Federalsburg for as long as the town has existed, and its tidal reach brings the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area into town. Federalsburg runs its own Critical Area program, which the town updated in 2026. Lots inside town limits that sit near the creek go through the town for tree removal approval.
North of town, Idylwild Wildlife Management Area covers about 4,000 acres of mixed pine and bottomland hardwood forest along the creek. Many homes in the area back up to the same kind of woods. Sweetgum, red maple and loblolly pine do well on wet ground, but their roots stay shallow.
Over in Preston and the riverside village of Choptank, the water that matters is the Choptank River and its creeks. Those areas are outside Federalsburg, so Caroline County handles Critical Area permits there. Dead or hazardous trees near the water can usually come down with a simple plan and native replacements. We can tell you which rules apply before work starts.

Floods, Wind and Fallen Trees in Federalsburg
Federalsburg has a long flood history. Marshyhope Creek overflowed in 1936, and in 1956 the water rose so high on Main Street it reached the white brick on the town’s movie theater. Heavy rain in June 2006 damaged roads around Federalsburg again. Flooding soaks the soil and loosens roots, so trees often fall days after the water goes down, when the next wind comes through. If a tree falls on your home or across your driveway, call 410-827-5198 any time. We are on call 24/7.

Common tree problems in Federalsburg:
Flood-stressed trees. Trees that sit in standing water for days after a flood can lose fine roots and start to decline. The damage may not show until a season or two later, when branches die back from the top.
Shallow roots in bottomland. Low ground along Marshyhope Creek keeps roots near the surface. Big sweetgums and red maples on soggy soil are more likely to tip over in storms than the same trees on higher ground.
Dead ash near homes. Emerald ash borer is present on the Eastern Shore. Once an ash tree dies it dries out and turns brittle fast, so it should come down before it starts dropping limbs on a roof, car or fence.
Pines leaning over yards. Loblolly pines along woodland edges in Federalsburg, American Corner and Smithville grow tall and lean toward open yards. In a strong wind, they can snap or come down onto houses, sheds and cars.
For Federalsburg, Preston and the farms in between, our work covers tree removal, trimming and pruning, storm damage cleanup after floods and wind, and stump grinding. Creekfront and pond owners can clear reed overgrowth with our Marsh Master phragmite control, and we sell seasoned firewood. We are permitted to move and sell wood under Maryland rules. Federalsburg Tree Service FAQ
My trees stood in floodwater. Will they die?
Not always. It depends on the species, how long the water stayed and how healthy the tree was before. Some recover, and some decline over the next few seasons. We can look at them and tell you which ones to watch and which ones to remove.
Who approves tree removal near Marshyhope Creek?
Inside Federalsburg town limits, the town runs its own Critical Area program. Outside town, Caroline County handles it. Either way, dead, dying or hazardous trees near the water usually can come down with a simple plan and replacement planting.
Do you serve Preston and the Choptank area?
Yes. We work in Preston, the village of Choptank, Bethlehem and Harmony, along with American Corner and Smithville. If your trees are near the Choptank River, we can check whether the Critical Area rules apply.
Is Federalsburg too far for you?
No. Federalsburg is part of our regular Caroline County area, and we schedule work there just like we do closer to home. The drive down Route 313 is a familiar one for our crews. Estimates are free, and storm calls are answered 24/7.
