Waterfront Tree Work and Critical Area Permits

Much of Queen Anne’s County sits inside the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, which covers all land within 1,000 feet of tidal water. The first 100 feet from the shoreline is a protected buffer. On Kent Island, along the Chester and Wye Rivers and around Kent Narrows, that includes a lot of backyards.

Removing a tree in the Critical Area, even a dead or leaning one, usually needs a county tree removal permit before any cutting starts. The county inspects the trees, may ask for a letter from a licensed tree expert, and requires native replacement trees afterward. Cutting without a permit can bring a citation and extra replanting.

We do this kind of waterfront work every season. We assess your trees, provide the licensed tree expert documentation the county asks for, and plan the removal and replanting so the job is done right the first time. Inside Centreville and Queenstown, the town handles the permit, and we can help there too. Routine pruning does not need a permit.

Storm Damage and 24/7 Emergency Tree Removal

Queen Anne’s County takes a beating when storms come up the Bay. Hurricane Isabel flooded Kent Narrows in 2003 and dropped trees on homes across the county. In 2017 an EF2 tornado crossed Kent Island from Bay City into Stevensville, and in 2020 Tropical Storm Isaias spun up a tornado along Stagwell Road right here in Queenstown. When a tree comes down on your house, car, driveway or fence, call 410-827-5198 any time, day or night. Our crews respond around the clock to make the area safe, remove the tree and haul away the debris.

Common tree problems in Queen Anne’s County:

Shallow, waterlogged roots. Low ground and high water tables, especially on southern Kent Island and near the rivers, keep roots shallow. Big trees on wet ground are more likely to tip over in high wind.

Salt and flooding. Storm surge and higher tides push salt water into waterfront yards. Trees near the shoreline can decline over a few seasons and become hazards before they look dead.

Dying ash trees. Emerald ash borer was confirmed in Queen Anne’s County in 2015. Infested ash trees die and turn brittle fast, so they are safer and less costly to remove early.

Bradford pears. Maryland now lists Callery (Bradford) pear as a prohibited invasive plant. These trees split apart easily in storms. We remove them and can suggest native trees to plant in their place.

From our Queenstown yard we provide tree removal, trimming and pruning, stump grinding, storm damage cleanup, Marsh Master phragmite control for shorelines and ponds, and seasoned firewood. We are permitted to move and sell wood under Maryland rules. Every estimate is free, so request yours today.
